A church in Sherman, Texas, reportedly hosted a “Family-Friendly Drag Show” over the weekend, and video captured a drag queen entering the church’s “modern worship” venue — as well as a person dressed in a pink bunny costume who appeared to taunt protesters by the venue’s door.

What are the details?

The Christian Post reported that a Saturday night “Pride Prom” organized by Grayson County Pride was set to take place at Pecan Grove Park West in Sherman — which around 90 minutes north of Dallas.

But the Post said the event location was changed at the last minute to 118 W. Pecan Street in Sherman — the address of the Mosaic Campus of First United Methodist Sherman, which is billed with a “Mosaic Modern Worship” title on the church website.

TheBlaze on Thursday compared church website images of its Mosaic Modern Worship campus building to images captured on video of the venue on the night of the event, and they appear identical.

The Mosaic portion of the church’s website says, “We are young and old, married and single, gay and straight, liberal and conservative, non-conformists and traditionalists, those recovering from addictions, those still battling addictions, and those whose challenges take other forms.” It adds that “the theology you’ll discover here begins and ends in the love of God. We believe that God desires a relationship with every single one of us. Regardless of who we are, what we’ve done, or where we’ve been.”

What happened outside the venue?

Protesters stood across the street from the venue, which is where video of what was going on outside was recorded.

At one point, a drag queen dressed in a sparkly outfit and waving a pink fan walked into the venue. A person dressed in a pink bunny costume was seen appearing to taunt protesters outside the venue as well.

One of the counter-protesters in front of the venue held a yellow sign that read, “My grandchildren are safer with drag queens …”

Anything else?

The Post said Sherman police officers were seen escorting drag performers around the location, adding that a police spokesperson said event organizers hired two off-duty officers to provide security.

“It is common practice for businesses and/or organizations to hire off-duty officers to provide security,” Sherman Police Sgt. Brett Mullen told the Post in a Wednesday email. “Sherman officers engaging in off-duty employment are there solely to keep the peace and enforce state law.”

The Christian Post reported that neither the church nor Senior Pastor Rev. Denise Peckham responded to its request for comment Wednesday.

The Post added that a bill is in committee in the Texas House that would restrict “all-ages” drag performances and that the bill passed the state Senate last month. The bill says anyone under age 18 would be prohibited from attending “sexually oriented” events, and businesses that host such events could be fined as much as $10,000 for each violation, the outlet added.
