A pregnant nurse who was canceled by many on social media as a racist over an altercation caught in a viral video has provided receipt evidence that she was innocent of the allegations.
The video showed a white woman in scrubs struggling to retain possession of a rental bike against a young black man who claims he rented it first.
Many on social media excoriated the woman after the video appeared to show her tearing up and then move along after acquiescing to the group’s demands.
The video garnered tens of millions of views on social media and was posted to the Instagram account of attorney Ben Crump.
“This is unacceptable! A white woman was caught on camera attempting to STEAL a Citi Bike from a young Black man in NYC. She grossly tried to weaponize her tears to paint this man as a threat. This is EXACTLY the type of behavior that has endangered so many Black men in the past!” he claimed in the post.
The nurse was placed on leave by New York City Health + Hospitals, which released a statement calling the video “disturbing.”
On Thursday, the New York Post reported that it had reviewed receipts provided by the woman’s attorney to prove her version of the events. Justin Marino said his client Sarah Jane Comrie was 6 months pregnant.
The two receipts showed that she had paid for the Citi Bike twice just a few minutes apart. Her attorney said that after a 12-hour shift Comrie paid for the bike but was accosted by five individuals, including the man who claimed that he had paid for the bike.
She said that he forced her to dock the bike immediately and was pressured by the group to pay for a different bike, which is proven by her receipts, according to her attorney.
“The whole narrative that she stole the bike is patently wrong,” said Marino to WCBS-TV.
“Do you think any pregnant woman in their right mind would jump on another young man’s bike, and like just scoot away, while they’re six months pregnant?” he added.
Marino went on to call it “appalling” that Crump and others would falsely claim that racism was at the root of the incident.
