Two Christian students from Michigan State University are taking legal action against a former professor, Amy Wisner, whom they accuse of forcing them and hundreds of other students to pay a $99 membership fee to her left-wing activist group as a course requirement. The students claim that Wisner created and controlled a group called “The Rebellion Community”, which they were forced to join as members. Wisner had claimed that the fees collected from the students’ membership were used to pay for the technology and guest speakers, and that she did not personally benefit from it. However, students claim that the fees funded left-wing causes, including abortion provider Planned Parenthood, which Wisner openly claimed on her Facebook page. She also allegedly used the money to purchase an RV which she called “The Rebellion RV” and took on a road trip across the United States. The suing students feel that their right to free speech was violated by the requirement to fund political causes that contradict their views, and they want Wisner to refund the fees and provide a detailed breakdown of how the money was used. The University has offered a refund to students who paid for the “The Rebellion Community” membership, and Wisner has been placed on leave.
