The Wall Street Journal has reported that Ukraine sent a group of untrained recruits to fight in the battle of Bakhmut in order to save their professional soldiers for an expected counteroffensive. Out of 16 men in the group, 11 were killed or captured. These men were mostly poor and unemployed, with no combat experience. Some even threatened to refuse orders but ultimately went. The men participated in brutal house-to-house combat with little support, training, or ammunition. The Ukrainian president tried to hold onto the city, but it was fully captured by Russian forces. The chief of Wagner Group estimated that 50,000 Ukrainians lost their lives in the battle, with 20% of those recruited from prison killed.
