Where Trust In The News Is Highest (& Lowest)

A new report by the Reuters Institute shows that trust in news has decreased in many countries around the world, except for during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic when it temporarily increased. Even with the decrease, trust levels are still higher than before the pandemic began. Polling 93,000 consumers in 46 markets, the report covers a range of topics, including perceptions of media coverage of the war in Ukraine, changing habits of younger consumers, and where people go for climate news. Overall trust in news fell in 21 markets, remained the same in 18 markets, and increased in just seven markets. Finland had the highest share of consumers who agreed that news is trustworthy, while the United States and Slovakia were at the bottom of the list. The report also found that nations with lower levels of trust tended to have higher levels of selective avoidance and declining interest in news. Reasons cited for this included being put off by the repetitiveness of the news agenda, feeling worn out by the news, or because it can’t be trusted.
