Bono’s ONE foundation has come under scrutiny for only donating 1.2% of its funds to charities in need. While the organisation has never been focused on direct handouts, many are surprised by these figures. The non-profit organisation received nearly £9.6 million ($12.4 million) in donations in 2008, but only £118,000 ($152,500) was donated to charity. £5.1 million ($6.6 million) went towards paying salaries. ONE spokesman Oliver Buston has defended the organisation, stating the money is used for promoting campaigns and raising awareness instead of being given straight to those in need. ONE takes no money from the public, and most funding comes from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
