The Pharmaceutical Security Institute reports that there is an increase in counterfeit medicines. In 2021, nearly 6,000 pharmaceutical crime incidents were recorded, up 38% from the previous year and the highest figure in 20 years. North America recorded the most counterfeit pharmaceutical seizures, followed by the Asia Pacific, Latin America, the Near East, Eurasia, Europe, and Africa. The World Health Organization reveals that about 10% of medical products in low- and middle-income countries are substandard or falsified, which could be closer to 19-50% in sub-Saharan African nations. This number could be even higher since many cases of fake drugs may go undetected or unreported. One reason for the increase in fake or defective pharmaceuticals is the rise in online pharmacies.
