However, the Founders believed that any act beyond the limits of the Constitution is considered usurpation or theft of power from the people. Compliance with unconstitutional acts only guarantees more of the same in the future. Non-compliance and refusal to cooperate with officers of the Union is an essential part of keeping the federal government in check. Thomas Jefferson wrote that a free people claim their rights, as derived from the laws of nature, and not as a gift of their chief magistrate. The right to keep and bear arms is part of the laws of nature. Ultimately, it is up to the people to protect and defend their own constitution and liberty, whether the government likes it or not.
