The Irish government is close to passing a law that would criminalize hate speech and introduce legal protections for transgender individuals, but critics argue that its vague language could be used to suppress criticism of the government’s progressive policies. The proposed law would expand the scope of an existing 1989 law on incitement to hatred by adding gender, sex, descent, and disability to the list of protected categories. Anyone convicted of hate speech could face fines of up to €5,000 ($5,400) and prison terms of up to two years. The law has divided opinion, with just 25% of respondents to a 2019 consultation approving of it.
