Barbara Baker was a first grade teacher in the 1960s who noticed her incoming students were not prepared because her school district had dropped phonics. To fix this, she started her own preschool in 1963 to teach students phonics. She believed that if the students learned phonics in preschool, it could not be taken away from them. This new preschool eventually became the Challenger School, which now has 27 campuses across five states and educates around 11,000 children. The school’s curriculum is designed to create a foundation for students’ future education with a heavy emphasis on reading, writing, and math. Challenger’s course of study also includes history and logic to help students understand human action and to evaluate new ideas. Barbara Baker’s original vision was to make sure young children learned to read, and that legacy continues today at the Challenger School.
