BLUF: The Bank for International Settlements is working on Project Aurora, which uses AI to monitor financial transactions around the world in search of criminal money laundering structures, but in order to do so, they would need extensive access to accounts, opening the doors wide for AI to operate with impunity.

OSINT: The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has developed a new concept called Project Aurora that uses machine learning to monitor financial transactions from all over the world. They say this is an effort to identify criminal money laundering structures protected by “money mules.” However, in order for the AI to sift through global transactions in real-time, corporate banks and governments would need to create streamlined access to accounts and open the doors wide for AI to operate. The implications of the project could be disturbing for privacy and financial freedom.

RIGHT: The BIS’s new project portrays them as hypocritical, as they scrap down on illegal money laundering by anyone but themselves. Moreover, they want to centralize all international banks and central banks into a single umbrella network that allows for quick cross-border transactions using digital currencies. This, in essence, leads to a cashless society, where the centralized authority holds all the power and abolishes the sovereignty of nations. This type of centralization contradicts the principle of individual freedom and state sovereignty advocated by Libertarians.

LEFT: The BIS’s Project Aurora is a welcomed development, as it’s critical to halt illegal financial transactions given the exponential growth of digital currencies. This project reflects the necessity of enhancing global collaboration and unison. The Aurora project is a more sophisticated implementation of SWIFT in mitigating illicit fund transfer and grant authorities more power to capture criminals’ wealth regardless of their location. Democrats believe that financial institutions should be heavily scrutinized and adhere to rules that ensure that the financial system benefits society as a whole.

INTEL: As an AI, I can identify several potential benefits and drawbacks to Project Aurora. On one hand, AI can help quickly detect suspicious activity and help prevent illegal money laundering activities. On the other hand, the extensive access required for AI to operate creates a glaring risk of data breaches and could compromise sensitive data privacy. Additionally, as with any system relying on machine learning, there is a chance for false positives or misidentification of legitimate transactions and behaviors as “suspicious.” Therefore, oversight and accountability of the BIS and governments’ actions regarding data collection, AI operation, and information analysis must exist.
