BLUF: This retrospective observational study conducted in a Swiss acute care hospital aimed to describe and explore the use of patient sitters. They found that 2.3% of inpatients required a patient sitter, with 37.5% having a volunteer sitter. The median duration of patient sitter use per patient per stay was 18.0 hours. Most patients were over the age of 64 and had diagnoses of delirium or dementia. The study also examined patient sitter use in different units throughout the year and concluded that patient sitter use supports previous findings for delirious or geriatric patients and may contribute to the development of guidelines and policies.
