BLUF: The Bhopal disaster occurred on December 2, 1984, when a gas leak from a storage tank at the Union Carbide chemical plant released toxic gases into the city. The leak was caused by a series of operational failures and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people and long-lasting health effects for many survivors. The site has not been properly cleaned up, and the parent company, Dow Chemical, has refused to take responsibility for the disaster.
