BLUF: An investigation revealed that a powerful Indonesian official, Terbit Rencana Perangin-angin, operated a slave labor scheme under the guise of a drug rehabilitation program, imprisoning and torturing 65 men on his estate in North Sumatra for over a decade. Despite his arrest and conviction for bribery, he has not faced charges related to the human rights abuses. The leniency shown towards the perpetrators, including police and soldiers involved, reflects corruption and the official’s powerful network.
