BLUF: Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States, was recently made into a federal holiday. The Emancipation Proclamation, issued two-and-a-half years prior to Juneteenth, did not immediately free all enslaved individuals, as it only applied to Confederate territory, and Union soldiers had to enforce it. In 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and declared freedom for the enslaved people there, marking the true end of slavery. However, the significance of Juneteenth goes beyond celebration, as there are ongoing efforts to prevent teaching about the historical context of this important event.
