BLUF: Japan plans to release water contaminated by the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster into the Pacific Ocean over the next 30 years, but concerns remain about its safety for the marine environment and human health. The treated water, stored in tanks at the site, has undergone a five-stage processing system to remove 62 of the 64 radionuclides. While tritium and carbon-14 remain in the water, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) argues that their concentrations are within safe limits and will reduce further through dilution. However, critics worry about the potential concentration of tritium in the food web and the potential long-term effects on ocean health and human health.
