BLUF: Hate crimes in Texas reached a new record high in 2022, with a 6.4 percent increase from the previous year. LGBTQ+ and Black individuals were the primary targets, and there is a disproportionate rate of hate crimes against the LGBTQ+ community. The rise in hate crimes correlates with an increase in anti-LGBTQ+ protests and antisemitism in Texas. Despite improvements in data collection, many hate crimes in the state continue to go unreported and undercounted. Texas ranks fifth in total hate crime incidents nationally and has seen a significant increase in hate crimes over the past decade.
