BLUF: The 2019 report titled “The Future of Urban Consumption in a 1.5°C World” highlights targets for cities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting consumption-based emissions in various sectors, including food, construction, clothing, vehicles, aviation, and electronics. The report, co-created by C40, Arup, and the University of Leeds, emphasizes the role of mayors in taking action to avert climate emergency and transition to a zero-carbon world. The report’s recommendations are not binding, but cities that have joined the C40 network, along with Arup’s network, may commit to them. Critics argue that these plans are being made outside the democratic process and call for a halt to C40 and Arup’s activities.
