BLUF: Gamification strategies can not only make learning IT and programming more enjoyable but allow for a personalized experience, adapting the learning process to each individual’s needs and progress levels, as demonstrated by an initiative from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU).

Programming is one such field where mastering skills can be complicated. A team of dedicated researchers from Kaunas University of Technology (KTU), along with colleagues in Poland, Portugal, and Italy, suggest applying a game-like approach to this process.

“The concept of ‘Gamification’ involves weaving in elements of games, like levels, points, or leaderboards, into learning,” explains KTU researcher Rytis Maskeli?nas.

He states that the main objective is to craft a learning experience that’s both fun and challenging, similar to playing a game. The hope is that this engaging method could stir students’ interest in programming and help them remember the information better.

An adaptive, student-centered learning experience

The greatest advantage of the gamification strategy, Maskeli?nas points out, lies in its adaptability. It allows customization based on an individual learner’s current knowledge, abilities, and progress.

The process starts with identifying each student’s capabilities and weaker areas. Then, with the guidance of AI or a human tutor, personalized learning goals and plans are set.

“The constant monitoring of a student’s progress helps tailor the teaching pace as per the individual’s understanding of the concept. This personal touch maximizes learning effectiveness, helping the learner realize their fullest potential,” emphasises Maskeli?nas.

He further notes that in today’s fast-paced world, this game-like classroom setting can be a significant motivating factor for the students.

It becomes increasingly important as traditional teaching falls behind in providing up-to-date programming knowledge in a form that can engage modern students efficiently. Coping with such identified limitations, the IT sector introduces promising innovations.

Teachers benefit from game-based learning

Introduced recently, this learning system created by KTU has already found traction in Lithuania. During a module run by KTU under a governmental project, teachers got to experience this gamified learning process.

Tomas Blažauskas, a KTU professor, claims the implementation has been successful, with positive feedback indicating strong interest and support.

Keeping learners engaged is the main aim here, notes Blažauskas, and that has been achieved. Teachers’ willingness to bring this approach into their classrooms stood as a major success in the initial testing.

However, some stumbling blocks join the course to an educational setting. Creating appropriate digital content can be a challenge and requires technical resources. Even then, bureaucratic obstacles and resistance to change can slow down the adaptation process of these tools.

Finally, aside from these roadblocks, a shift in mindset among the participants, both teachers and students, is necessary. They must grasp the relevance of these technologies and how to use them.
