BLUF: Large-scale research reveals that roughly one in seven Americans reported experiencing long Covid by end-2022, with a greater risk among the unvaccinated, women, middle-aged individuals, and those with lower incomes or education.
OSINT: In-depth research managed by UCL and Dartmouth academics suggests that one out of seven people in the US had experienced long Covid by the close of 2022. Long Covid is linked with an increase in anxiety, low mood, and ongoing mobility and comprehension problems, with vaccinated individuals exhibiting a lower risk.
Long Covid impacts millions across the US unevenly, with individuals suffering from it being more likely to report low mood, daily task challenges, and memory and understanding problems. This research analyzed data from 461,550 respondents to the US Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey from mid-2022 to the end of the same year. Those with long Covid symptoms, past or present, were compared with those who never had Covid-19 and those who had Covid-19 but without the long-lasting symptoms.
Following the WHO, the study defined long Covid as the persistence, or emergence of fresh symptoms at least three months after initial infection. The study states that half (47%) of the surveyed individuals reported they had Covid-19 at some point, 14% had experienced long Covid symptoms once, with half of them still having symptoms at the time of the survey. The study heavily depends on self-reporting, and some surveyed may have had Covid-19 unknowingly.
The study found long Covid symptoms more common among women, white people, middle-aged people, people with lower income or education, and those with severe symptoms during their initial Covid-19 infection.
