BLUF: A University of Miami student faces charges for a nationwide hacking scheme targeting a major supply chain company, manipulating tracking data and facilitating fraudulent refunds totaling $3.5 million.

Matthew Frederic Bergwall, aged 21, a student at the University of Miami, has been implicated in a complex hacking operation targeting an unnamed multinational supply chain company. According to the reported indictment, Bergwall breached the company’s system and manipulated product tracking information – a scheme that facilitated nearly 10,000 fraudulent product returns and refunds, amounting to $3.5 million. The offenders offered this as a service, codenamed “FTID”.

Alongside few unnamed collaborators, they reportedly fraudulently obtained full refunds for items they neither purchased nor returned. Apart from the FTID fraud scheme, Bergwall also handled purchases for personal use and tricked the company with fake tracking info to secure full refunds. The purchased items include a Rolex watch, a TeamGee H2O Electric skateboard, a Smart UHD TV, and a pair of Reebok shoes.

While Bergwall faces severe allegations, the case is still under investigation. If found guilty, the consequence could be as harsh as 45 years in federal prison. With Homeland Security Investigations involved in the case, more updates are expected soon.
