BLUF: Doubts about the validity of certain elements depicted in Fig 1 of a previously published scientific article lead to its retraction on the grounds of reliability and integrity, despite authors’ explanation there could be similarities from shared source images.

Evidently, elements within Fig 1 of the article bore a suspicious resemblance to those in others, such as Figs 3A-C of another paper, suggesting potential duplication. Similarly, two sets of two areas within the same panel of Fig 1b also exhibited questionable similarities. The authors defended these resemblances, suggesting that serial sections from a shared source may cause an area to appear identical without being a duplicate. However, due to the unavailability of the original data behind the contentious images, the allegations could not be exhaustively investigated or dismissed. Consequently, doubts about the reliability and integrity of the results remained, leading the PLOS ONE Editors to retract the article in question. Various authors disagreed with the editorial decision but were unable to overturn this result.
