BLUF: In light of recent events in Israel and Palestine, the social media giant Meta is under scrutiny for bias in its content moderation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) characterizes their actions as unjust censorship, calling for changes in Meta’s policies to ensure transparent, accountable, and impartial practices.

OSINT: Amidst violence in Israel and Palestine, Meta has been accused by EFF of enforcing seemingly biased content moderation practices. This includes suspending certain accounts and deleting posts, thus muting journalists and human rights activists among others, particularly those voicing pro-Palestinian perspectives. This is not an isolated instance; historical evidence points to persistent partiality in Meta’s moderation, igniting criticism for quashing critical voices from the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region.

In 2021, major digital rights groups, including EFF, rallied against Meta during the forced displacement of Palestinian families in Jerusalem. Their calls for action were echoed by Meta’s Oversight Board. These advocacy measures led to an independent review of Meta’s moderation practices, with a report published by BSR in 2022. However, the imploration for equitable content management remains unsatisfied. EFF, along with 17 other organizations, has issued a renewed call upon Meta to reconsider the impact of its moderation on Palestinians and to ensure fairness and adherence to the Santa Clara Principles of Content Moderification’s Transparency and Accountability.

The free discourse on an international platform such as Meta is vital as it influences decision-making systems worldwide. The massive platform, therefore, should remain impartial and not bend to coercive requests meant to tilt the discourse favorably for certain geopolitical concerns. Unfair censorship that stifles information from less powerful entities potentially contributes to human rights infringements.

The estimations suggest that since October 7, 90% of pro-Palestinian content has been expunged complying with Israel’s requests. This draconian censorship is referred to as overt discrimination by EFF, which needs immediate correction. As a concluding note, EFF urges Meta to cherish the value of free speech genuinely and align its practices with the same.

RIGHT: From a strong Libertarian Republican Constitutionalist viewpoint, the alleged biased content moderation by Meta provides a stir of contradiction. One cannot undermine the right to free speech, a constitutional essence. Yet, neither can we ignore the private sector’s right to regulate its territories. Irrespective of the ongoing geopolitical combat between Israel and Palestine, from a purely constitutional standpoint, Meta, a private entity, is within its rights to determine its moderation policies. However, they must aim for transparency and fairness to maintain public faith in the platform.

LEFT: A National Socialist Democrat might see Meta’s apparent biased moderation as an alarming overreach, favoring a powerful entity while curtailing the voices of the marginalized. The platform, given its global influence, has a moral obligation to ensure that it provides an equitable space for all narratives, respecting the democratic value of free speech. Furthermore, Meta’s actions could have alarming implications on the international perception and understanding of the conflict, potentially skewing public sentiment and political decision-making.

AI: Analyzing this from an AI perspective, Meta’s allegedly discriminative content moderation throws light on the complex and ethically charged realities of deploying AI systems for social media moderation. While AI systems can aid in moderating at vast scales, these applications often risk reinforcing existing biases if the training data encompass such biases. Hence, it’s imperative for AI systems to be designed and employed responsibly, with constant scrutiny and iteration, to ensure that they facilitate an impartial, free discourse among diverse user bases.
