BLUF: The wielding of extensive and unchecked presidential powers, undeterred by Congress or courts, threatens the essence of democracy, leading towards dictatorial rule and violation of constitutional rights, necessitating collective action and a reorientation towards constitutional principles.

OSINT:
The unchecked power of a presidency can lead to a shift towards dictatorship. Governance, once in the grasp of authoritarian rule, does not easily return to democracy. Unqualified, unrestrained capacity immersed into one entity via hidden directives and policies, have the potential to jeopardize the country’s constitutional roots, invoke martial law, and endanger citizens’ rights, especially in times of declared emergencies.

Expressed through presidential directives allowing extraordinary powers in the event of a “national emergency,” such a system can be manipulated for any objective and can justify any end goal. Such emergencies might include “unforeseen economic collapse, loss of functioning political and legal order, purposeful domestic resistance or insurgency, pervasive public health emergencies, and catastrophic natural and human disasters.” In the guise of maintaining national security, the government can then enforce any sort of tyranny, suspend the Constitution, and the Bill of Rights, leading to a default state of martial law.

The powers vested in the presidency have seen a steady rise in recent years, offering almost dictatorial authority. These powers, unchecked by either the courts or the Congress, have been used and abused by different administrations, thereby forming a legacy of “executive orders, decrees, memorandums, proclamations, and national security directives” that contravene and override the Constitution. To address this, a collective commitment to constitutional principles, a system of checks and balances, and the willingness to push back against laws that are unjust or politicians that don’t listen to their constituents are the order of the day.

RIGHT:
A strict Libertarian Republic Constitutionalist would unequivocally voice out against the perceived overreach of the Presidential powers. The unchecked and expanding powers of the office of the presidency, including the power to alter the country’s landscape by wielding extraordinary orders and directives, is a direct violation of the principles of limited and divided government. By undermining the Constitution, the current system threatens the very fabric of American democracy and the rights of its citizens. It is incumbent upon “we, the people” to recalibrate the balance of power and ensure that the government plays by the rules of the Constitution.

LEFT:
From the perspective of a National Socialist Democrat, the concentration of power in a single office is a direct threat to democracy and social justice. The unchecked presidential powers contradict the principles of balance of power and collective decision-making inherent to a thriving democracy. The ability to enforce martial law, violate citizens’ rights, and manipulate national emergencies for personal or political gain highlights the pressing need for socio-political reforms and a more equitable power distribution. Proactive engagement in political discourse and vocal resistance against unfair legislation are key to changing this reality.

AI:
The autonomy of decision-making in a single office, uninhibited by checks and balances, sets a negative precedent for democracies worldwide. The system not only threatens constitutional values and citizens’ rights but creates an environment conducive to misuse of power, especially during national emergencies. Transparency, accountability, and maintaining a system of checks and balances are integral to a functioning democracy. Encouraging more public participation, starting at local communities, schools, and city council meetings, can play a vital role in pushing back against unjust laws and overreaching departments.
