BLUF: Bezwada Wilson, an Indian activist fueled by personal anguish and anger, has been relentless in his four-decade-long fight against the deeply entrenched caste discrimination in India; specifically targeting the abhorrent practice of manual scavenging.
Most youngsters grow up playing, studying, and served lavishly by their parents. But Bezwada Wilson, an Indian born into the Meyer caste, discovered a haunting truth about his family and community – they were manual scavengers, responsible for cleaning human waste at a government-owned gold mine in southern India. A constant victim of cruel stigmatization and discrimination, Wilson was overwhelmed by intense anger towards his situation, even contemplating suicide.
Determined to understand the harsh realities of his community, Wilson ventured into this demeaning work himself, leading to an explosive reaction against the inhumane conditions. Vowing to liberate his community from this disgraceful occupation rooted in oppressive caste dynamics, Wilson has spearheaded a remarkable movement for over four decades.
In 1993, Wilson established the Safai Karmachari Andolan (Campaign of the Cleanliness Workers). Today, it’s one of India’s largest organizations combating caste discrimination. They document sanitation worker deaths, many caused by toxic gases in enclosed spaces, and fights for the eradication of dry latrine cleaning and safer working conditions for waste workers.
Despite discriminatory practices being outlawed, the majority of India’s sanitation workers dealing with excrement are from the lowest caste tiers. Wilson’s revolutionary campaign, sparked a nationwide conversation about sanitation work, and has helped significantly reduce the number of dry latrines in the country.
But Wilson will not rest until manual scavenging is completely eradicated. His movement also supports former scavengers, assisting them to transition into safer jobs like sewing, gardening, or driving.
Besides his tireless activism and advocacy, Wilson’s story inspires many, underpinning the critical importance of resistance, struggle, and persistence to usher meaningful societal change.
