BLUF: New study indicates that the thymus, an often overlooked organ, plays a pivotal role in adult immunity, and its health may be affected by age, sex, and lifestyle factors.

OSINT: Although traditionally considered irrelevant in adult life, the thymus reveals itself as a significant actor in the adult immune system. Research from Linköping University (LiU) in Sweden suggests its health corresponds to factors like age, sex, and lifestyle. Contrary to previous beliefs, age-related changes in the thymus, characterized by fatty tissue replacement, may mirror the aging of the immune system itself.

CT chest scans expose variations in thymus appearance. Significant points include the greater incidence of fatty degeneration in men and abdominally obese individuals. Researchers found lifestyle choices, specifically diets low in fibre, were associated with unhealthy thymus changes. Upon examining the correlation between thymic health and the immune system, a diminished production of T-cells was detected in individuals exhibiting thymic fatty degeneration—adding weight to the thesis of its pivotal role in adult immunity.

The naturally occurring schooling process of T-cells that happens in the thymus, where T-cells learn to identify and fight off pathogens while avoiding the body’s cells, ties the organ to a proper functioning immune system. Lower T-cell regeneration among individuals with fat-degenerated thymuses suggests the possibility to influence immune system aging. Future research aims to determine whether thymus health could provide clues to disease risks. This study was funded by various entities, including Linköping University.
