Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter in Germany, Stanford University, and the University of Pennsylvania have introduced a different method that does not require laser lights. They successfully reconfigured the magnetic properties of an atom-thick substance, ?-RuCl?, by placing it within an optical cavity. This change transformed its magnetic order from an antiferromagnet to a ferromagnet.

The change occurs due to showing ?-RuCl? in an empty cavity which is not really empty in quantum physics. The optical cavity confines the field to a small volume, thereby enhancing the synergies between the light and the material.
