BLUF: Columbia University study reveals the detrimental effects of minor sleep loss on women’s metabolic health, increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes especially in postmenopausal women.

A recent Columbia University study unraveled potential health risks faced by women owing to minor sleep loss. The research disclosed that even reducing 90 minutes of sleep for six weeks spikes insulin resistance in normally well-rested women, with postmenopausal women experiencing it to a higher degree.

Achieving optimal health necessitates seven to nine hours of sleep per night. However, around one third of Americans do not meet the minimum requirement. This study underlines the serious implications of mild sleep deficit, maintained for six weeks, which could trigger changes in the body, escalating the risk of developing diabetes in women.

Focusing on women due to existing evidence suggesting a greater impact of poor sleep on women’s cardiometabolic health than men’s, the study engaged 38 women who regularly had at least seven hours of sleep. The research spanned two phases – one where respondents preserved their sufficient sleep and another in which they shortened their sleep by one and a half hours, for a span of six weeks each.

The findings highlighted that moderate sleep reduction for six weeks enhanced fasting insulin levels by over 12% and insulin resistance by nearly 15%. Notably, the effect intensified in postmenopausal women with insulin resistance spiking by more than 20%. The study stresses that maintaining sufficient sleep could lead to improved blood sugar control and reduced risk for type 2 diabetes, particularly among postmenopausal women.
