Taiwan has once again detected heightened Chinese military presence. The median line of the Taiwan Strait, normally considered a boundary, has borne witness to an infiltration of nine Chinese aircraft, while warships have been engaged in “combat readiness patrols”. Previously, Taiwan has protested against such China-led military exercises near its territory as it feels it threatens their stance on sovereignty.
China, who perceives Taiwan as part of its territory, continues to enforce pressure on Taiwan. Intriguingly, these activities dwindled during the Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the Apec summit in San Francisco, where he met the US President Joe Biden. However, right from Sunday morning, Taiwan’s Defense Ministry reported a resurgence in Chinese military activity with Su-30 and J-10 fighters, early warning, and electronic warfare aircraft detected. Beijing’s warships were also reported to be performing “joint combat readiness patrols”.
China refrained from commenting on the reported activity. It has previously claimed that such movements near Taiwan aim to counter “collusion” between Taiwan posers and the US, and ensure China’s territorial integrity. Taiwan, however, rejects China’s claims and asserts that only its people can determine their future.
The recent discussion between Presidents Biden and Xi had Taiwan on the forefront. The Chinese President highlighted that Taiwan was a significant and sensitive issue in US-China ties. With Taiwan’s Presidential elections edging closer in January and fraught relations with China remaining a crucial campaign topic, these tensions continue to mount.
