BLUF: Photographer Laura Pannack, motivated by a Romanian folk tale, explores the human relationship with time and mortality in remote Romanian villages, culminating in a haunting and unique photo book.

INTELWAR BLUF:

Photographer Laura Pannack initially visited Romania in 2012, seeking a different rhythm of life following a personal loss. Throughout the subsequent years, she found solace and inspiration in the serene isolation of remote Romanian villages, capturing moments and stories through her lens. Her project was inspired by a local legend named “Youth Without Age and Life Without Death,” a tale about a prince seeking a land where time remains motionless.

This tale inspired her to compile a book of photographs depicting the interplay between the timeless Romanian landscape, its people, and the fantastical elements of the story. A particular standout came about from a chance encounter with three sisters. In resonance with a specific line of the tale, they readily embraced the narrative, contributing an unforgettable visual to the collection.

The narrative arc of the project offered Pannack a perspective on temporal anxiety, highlighting that while longing for frozen time could be alluring, it also held the peril of outliving loved ones and cherished moments. She derived from the folk tale that what truly matters is cherishing time spent with loved ones. Currently, the photographer is tracing German folk narratives for a sequel project set in the forests of northeastern Germany.
