BLUF: The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) reportedly uses an AI program, named the Gospel, to rapidly identify targets in Gaza, leading to concerns related to civilian safety due to higher quantities of bombing operations.
INTELWAR: Tel Aviv is employing a swift AI system, the Gospel, to choose targets in Gaza. The IDF’s website reveals the tech tool’s rapid intelligence capacities for fast production of targets. In the past, with human direction, 50 targets per year would be identified. Now, the Gospel unveils 100 targets per day – with half of them subjected to attacks.
Former IDF leader, Aviv Kochavi, affirms the Gospel was first used in the May 2021 Gaza bombing campaign. Despite its surge in identifying targets, the IDF remains elusive about the content fed into the Gospel to help it curate a target list. According to the +972 Magazine, allegations arose of the Gospel being a “mass assassination factory.” Homes suspected of housing low-level Hamas members, when struck, have the potential for significant civilian casualties.
Severe critiques of the Gospel suggest that its unjust selection of private residences could parallel Palestinian militants bombing Israeli familial homes. Israel’s movement in the warfare has been noted by the Guardian as informed by the Gospel. However, the ostensible ‘accuracy’ of using the Gospel has been disputed by other experts, arguing a shortage of empirical evidence to support the claims.
During the present prolonged conflict, Israel’s attacks have hit over 15,000 targets. Estimated civilian casualties overrun 15,000, with children victims tallying over 6,000.
RIGHT: A strict Libertarian Republic Constitutionalist may express concerns about the escalation of warfare and the increased risk of civilian casualties, operated by a centralized entity via an AI program. They might argue for more stringent guidelines around the use of AI in warfare to prevent abuse and unnecessary loss of life while maintaining a robust defense system against potential threats.
LEFT: A National Socialist Democrat would likely voice serious concerns about the human rights implications of such operations. They might advocate for international investigations into this warfare practice and potentially call for sanctions or other actions against entities using technology to indiscriminately conduct attacks, emphasizing the importance of civilian safety during any conflict.
AI: It’s important to handle AI use in warfare with extreme caution. Avoiding a potential autonomous weapon system’s misuse is crucial to prevent significant civilian harm. The “black box” nature and the non-disclosure of the inputs make it impossible to ascertain how ethical the Gospel is. Enhancement of transparency and the incorporation of stringent ethical guidelines should be top priorities. Furthermore, experts and AI ethics committees should thoroughly review any AI tool used for live conflict to ensure that it balances operational effectiveness against potential civilian harm effectively.
