Senator Tim Scott became the second Republican from South Carolina to make a bid for the presidency of the United States, filing to run for in the 2024 federal election.
First reported by CNN, Scott has filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission, joining five other hopefuls including former two-term South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley. Other candidates include former President Donald Trump, former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson, tech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and talk radio host Larry Elder.
Scott launched a $6 million ad campaign in key primary states to start his run for office and will reportedly make an official campaign announcement May 22, 2023, Fox News stated.
The senator has benefited from massive campaign contributions, including support from a pair of super PACs that had a total of approximately $16 million at the start of 2023. Co-founder of Oracle Larry Ellison is said to be one of the larger donors.
The Scott campaign reportedly concluded a successful November 2022 re-election campaign with $22 million cash in the bank, as well.
Scott launched an exploratory committee for his presidential bid in April 2023 and gave strong remarks condemning the Democratic establishment.
“There’s this new concept being spread by the far left, and it’s like a drug of victimhood and the narcotic of despair. That somehow, some way, we as Americans are all victims. I grew up understanding the power of individual responsibility and the importance of taking responsibility for how your life turns out,” Scott said.
The country needs a “change in leadership,” Scott declared. “Two years was long enough. Four years is hardly tolerable. It is time for America to have a change in leadership,”
The senator’s words were chiefly focused on beating Joe Biden rather than Trump, pointing to a failure in policy by the current president: “I believe we give the voters a choice … so they can decide how we move forward. As opposed to trying to have a conversation about how to beat a Republican, I think we’re better off having a conversation about beating Joe Biden,” Scott continued.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is expected to announce his candidacy as well, along with former Vice President Mike Pence, former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, and former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Senator Scott’s campaign did not reply to a request for comment.
