Child sex trafficking is happening every day across the United States – in big cities, small towns, and rural areas in every state. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) received 31.9 million reports of suspected child sexual exploitation in 2022. One in six runaways who were reported missing were likely victims of child sex trafficking. Children living in group homes or those who have been part of the child welfare system are also “extremely” susceptible to recruitment by traffickers. Social media, online gaming sites, and other seemingly innocuous websites are frequently used by perpetrators for recruiting. There are four forms of child sex trafficking: pimp-controlled trafficking, gang-controlled trafficking, familial trafficking, and buyer-perpetuated trafficking. Anyone who suspects trafficking should contact local law enforcement.
