US General Mark Milley emphasized the importance of Kiev not using military equipment provided by the US to attack Russia to prevent a direct clash between NATO and Russia. This statement came after a neo-Nazi group, part of Kiev’s armed forces, carried out a cross-border raid in Russia using US equipment. Russian officials claim that the attack resulted in mortar and artillery attacks against civilian infrastructure and residential areas in the Belgorod region, though Ukraine’s military intelligence has not taken official credit. The New York Times reports that US officials believe Kiev was behind the attack, attempted drone strike on the Kremlin, and a series of assassinations and covert attacks within Russia. Kiev denies involvement in the Belgorod raid, but a representative from the Freedom of Russia Legion claimed that the group received “green light” from Kiev. Though the US has asked Ukraine not to use their military equipment for direct attacks on Russia, leaked documents suggest Ukrainian President Zelensky intends to do so. The Biden administration has approved European allies’ plans to transfer F-16s to Ukraine, though Biden claims that Zelensky has assured him that the fighter jets will not be used to attack Russia. US General Milley’s claims that this policy is implemented to avoid a direct war with Russia fall short considering the US has pledged $113 billion to back Kiev in this proxy war and has provided them with significant military aid. Numerous NATO commandos, US troops, CIA, and Special Operations forces are also present in Ukraine.
