In 2010, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad spoke at the United Nations and made controversial claims about the 9/11 attacks. He suggested that the U.S. government may have orchestrated the attacks to benefit their economy and their grip on the Middle East. Ahmadinejad also claimed that many people around the world shared this view and called for the United Nations to investigate the events of 9/11. The U.S. delegation exited the room in protest, along with 27 European Union delegations and others. Ahmadinejad also criticized Israel and defended Iran’s nuclear program, which has resulted in multiple U.N. sanctions. The Security Council has imposed these penalties, which Ahmadinejad believes is destroying the body’s credibility.
