Over Memorial Day weekend in Chicago, at least 51 people were shot, and 12 of them died. The violence happened despite “peacekeepers” patrolling the city to prevent it. HeyJackass.com, a site focused on Chicago gun violence statistics, reported that on one day alone, 10 people were killed, and there were at least 39 others wounded in shootings throughout the city. One of the victims was a 2-year-old girl who accidentally shot herself with a gun she found. The weekend also saw a 14-year-old girl grazed by a bullet and one person shot and killed near Mayor Brandon Johnson’s house. The Governor of Illinois sent 30 “peacekeepers” to try to prevent violence, but gunshots still erupted at North Avenue Beach between two groups of teens, leading to the beach’s closure.
