BLUF: Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has signed a bill into law that will withhold state funding from public and school libraries that ban books for partisan or doctrinal reasons. The legislation requires libraries to adopt the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights or develop a written statement declaring their inherent authority to provide an adequate collection of books and prohibit the practice of banning specific books or resources. The law takes effect on January 1, 2024. Critics have accused the governor of attempting to extinguish parental rights, while supporters argue that book bans threaten the freedom of thought and speech.
