BLUF: The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine is facing a new threat due to the recent destruction of a dam on the Dnipro River, which has deprived the plant of its main source of water for cooling its reactors and spent fuel rods. Despite the risk, the plant currently has enough stored water to support the reactors for a few months, and steps are being taken to replenish the supply. Ukraine’s nuclear industry relies heavily on the Zaporizhzhia plant, which is crucial for preventing a catastrophic meltdown. The war in Ukraine has further complicated the situation, with Russian forces occupying the plant and exerting control over its management. The plant has also faced shelling incidents, damaging the area where spent fuel is stored and disrupting the electricity supply. Long-term nuclear safety requires a stable political environment, predictable management structure, and a calm working environment, which have been violated at the Zaporizhzhia plant. The situation remains precarious, and urgent measures are needed to ensure the ongoing safety of the plant.
