BLUF: Ukrainian soldiers who were taken as prisoners of war by Russian forces have shared tales of horrifying treatment, including beatings, electric shocks, lack of healthcare, and near-starvation rations. The Ukrainian prisoners have seen much worse conditions compared to the Russian prisoners during the exchanges, highlighting the abusive relationship between the two sides. It is estimated that there are at least 8,000 to 10,000 Ukrainian prisoners, including medical personnel and female soldiers. The prisoners have endured physical abuse, inadequate medical care, and harsh living conditions during their captivity. Several Ukrainian soldiers are still held captive, despite being disabled and no longer able to fight. The prisoners describe how they were subjected to relentless beatings and hazing rituals, resulting in severe injuries and even deaths. The Russian filtration camps, where Ukrainian prisoners are screened and interrogated, have been criticized for violating human rights. The prisoners often faced malnutrition and lost significant weight during their time in captivity. The Ukrainian government and human rights organizations are calling for the release of the remaining prisoners, especially the wounded and pregnant soldiers who have suffered the most.
