BLUF: A “Universal Basic Income (UBI) ‘micro pilot scheme'” is set to pay participants £1,600 per month in England to study the effects of UBI on mental and physical health, with funding expected to come from local authorities or private sources. In Wales, a similar scheme is already underway for young people leaving care. The initiative is led by the think-tank Autonomy, which advocates for unconditional cash transfers and is connected to organizations such as the Wellcome Trust, Compass, and the Royal Society of Arts. Autonomy’s focus is on the future of work and climate change, with a strong emphasis on rethinking work in a post-work future. The organization’s board includes a professor and founder member of the xenofeminist collective Laboria Cuboniks, which aims to dismantle gender and the idea of nature.
