BLUF: Crop insurance in California, originally intended to protect farmers from losses, now incentivizes the growth of cash crops in ways that are not suitable for the changing climate. Heat is the biggest contributor to crop loss, followed by excess moisture. Tree crops such as pistachios and grapes have suffered the most, as they are unable to move. Perverse incentives in the crop insurance system support large agribusinesses and contribute to global warming.
