A study in the ‘Journal of the American Chemical Society’ showed a creative application of AI, where a popular model, ChatGPT, was put to task. The AI was tasked with the time-consuming job of scouring scientific texts. It extracted data that helped build a secondary tool, a model for predicting experimental outcomes.
Chemists rely heavily on past studies. Findings from these studies are like gold mines, but extracting the gold—relevant information—requires meticulous and time-consuming work. For instance, if scientists want to devise highly porous and crystalline structures such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which show promise in clean energy applications, they would have to sift through numerous scientific documents. The researchers, including Omar Yaghi, used ChatGPT for information extraction through prompts. They were mindful to construct the prompts strategically to achieve optimal responses while curtailing false results. An extraction task involving 228 MOF synthesis related papers yielded over 26,000 relevant data points for constructing roughly 800 of the compounds.
Additionally, another AI model was trained for predicting the crystalline status of MOFs using the extracted information. To make querying this data pool more accessible, a chatbot was created.
