Francisco Severo Torres, a 33-year-old from Massachusetts, was alleged to have attempted to open an emergency door on the aircraft mid-flight and allegedly attempted to stab a flight attendant. Despite his provocations, passengers and crewmembers subdued Torres, and upon landing, he was then arrested. Potentially, Torres faces life incarceration, up to five years of supervised release, and a large fine of up to $250,000.
As recounted by a witness, once Torres started his threatening actions, roughly 10 to 15 men ran after him, eventually pinning him to the floor. One of the passengers, Lisa Olsen, commented that it took four men to control Torres due to his erratic behavior and screaming. If convicted of the charges levelled against him, Torres could find himself serving a life sentence in prison, and subject to a crippling fine reaching $250,000.
